Agra Fort

Agra Fort, also known as the Red Fort of Agra, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site located in Agra, Uttar Pradesh, India. It is a magnificent fortress and palace complex that played a significant role in the Mughal Empire.



History:

Agra Fort was built during the reign of Emperor Akbar in the 16th century, but subsequent Mughal emperors, including Jahangir and Shah Jahan, made additions and modifications to the fort. It served as the main residence of the Mughal emperors until the capital shifted to Delhi.


Architecture: 

Agra Fort is an architectural masterpiece, blending elements of Islamic, Persian, and Hindu architectural styles. The fort is constructed mainly of red sandstone and encompasses an area of about 94 acres. It features impressive gates, massive walls, and numerous palaces, mosques, and other structures within its complex.


Entry Gates: 

The fort has four entry gates, each named after the direction it faces. These gates are the Delhi Gate (western gate), the Lahore Gate (eastern gate), the Amar Singh Gate (southern gate), and the Water Gate (northern gate).

 

Diwan-i-Aam:

The Diwan-i-Aam, or the Hall of Public Audience, is a grand hall where the Mughal emperor would address and meet the general public. It is an open courtyard surrounded by a colonnade with beautifully carved pillars.


Diwan-i-Khas: 

The Diwan-i-Khas, or the Hall of Private Audience, is a marble pavilion where the emperor would hold private meetings and receive important guests. It is known for its impressive marble throne, carved pillars, and decorative elements.


Jahangiri Mahal: 

The Jahangiri Mahal is one of the notable palaces within the fort. It was built by Akbar for his Rajput wives and later used as a residence by Jahangir. The palace features intricate stone carvings, beautiful balconies, and spacious courtyards.


Khas Mahal:

The Khas Mahal, also known as the Private Palace, was the emperor's private residence. It consists of several interconnected palaces, including the elegant marble-paneled Khas Mahal, the airy Anguri Bagh (grape garden), and the Sheesh Mahal (Mirror Palace). 


Musamman Burj: 

The Musamman Burj is an octagonal tower located on the riverside of Agra Fort. It was built by Shah Jahan as a private retreat for his beloved wife, Mumtaz Mahal. The tower offers a splendid view of the Taj Mahal in the distance.


Moti Masjid: 

The Moti Masjid, or Pearl Mosque, is a beautiful white marble mosque located within the Agra Fort complex. It was built by Emperor Shah Jahan for private prayer and is known for its exquisite marble work and intricate carvings.


Mughal Garden: 

Agra Fort also features well-maintained Mughal-style gardens with fountains, water channels, and lush greenery. These gardens provide a serene atmosphere and a pleasant place for visitors to relax and enjoy the surroundings.
