The Temple of Preah Vihear

The Temple of Preah Vihear is an ancient Hindu temple located in the Dângrêk Mountains, on the border between Cambodia and Thailand. It is dedicated to the Hindu deity Shiva and is considered one of the most significant archaeological sites in Southeast Asia.



Location:

The temple is situated on a 525-meter (1,722 feet) cliff in the Dângrêk Mountains, in the Preah Vihear Province of northern Cambodia. It is approximately 150 kilometers (93 miles) north of Angkor Wat, another famous temple complex.


UNESCO World Heritage Site: 

The Temple of Preah Vihear was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2008. It is recognized for its outstanding universal value and unique architectural features.


Architecture: 

The temple complex showcases a unique blend of Khmer architecture and natural surroundings. It comprises a series of sanctuaries, courtyards, causeways, and pavilions built on multiple levels, following the natural contours of the mountainside. The main sanctuary is located at the highest point of the site.


History: 

The construction of the Temple of Preah Vihear is believed to have started in the 9th century during the reign of the Khmer Empire. However, the majority of the surviving structures date from the 11th and 12th centuries when significant additions and improvements were made by different rulers. The temple was dedicated to the god Shiva.

The temple complex boasts intricate stone carvings and bas-reliefs depicting various Hindu mythological scenes, celestial nymphs, gods, and other religious motifs. The artwork reflects the exceptional craftsmanship of the Khmer Empire.
